The Senate recently passed S. 47, the Natural Resources Management Act, and I urge you to vote in favor of it when it reaches the House of Representatives. The package contains the Emery County Public Land Management Act, a bill that, following a land exchange with the state of Utah, would permanently protect as wilderness about 663,000 acres of Utah's deserving public lands. Some of Utah's most iconic places, such as Labyrinth Canyon, Desolation Canyon, Muddy Creek, and the San Rafael Swell, would finally receive the protections long sought by conservationists. The bill also designates about 60 miles of the Green River as Wild and Scenic, and will facilitate a trade of state lands out of wilderness, where they are constantly under threat of development. These gains in wilderness will protect fragile ecosystems and incredible scenery -- and protecting them from development is the kind of action that's needed in the face of climate change.

As a conservationist and a constituent, these lands are important to me.

These gains were the result of tough negotiations on the part of Senator Dick Durbin, who would not allow an earlier, weaker version of the Emery bill to get through the Senate. Please help this much improved version get across the finish line when it comes up for a vote in the House!
