On December 1, we released our new "2010 Report Card: Assessing Utah BLM's Management of Off-Road Vehicles." Off-road vehicle (ORV) use on Utah's public lands is an enormously controversial public lands issue, and ORV-caused damage erosion, water pollution, noise, air-borne dust, crushed and looted archaeological sites -- continues to increase. Based upon BLM's failure to comply with federal law and protect natural and historical resources from ORVs, we had to give BLM failing and very low grades for most categories.

Just over a year ago, Congress passed legislation to protect 180,000 acres of these public lands in Washington County; some lands were designated wilderness and others were included in National Conservation Areas. Now the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is developing plans to manage these places -- some of the very first BLM-managed wilderness areas and National Conservation Areas (NCAs) in Utah -- and you can help ensure that the agency does the job right.

BLM Closes Recapture Wash to Off-Road Vehicles

After dragging its feet for nearly two years, the Monticello Bureau of Land Management has temporarily closed Recapture Wash in southeast Utah to off-road vehicles, due to the damage to cultural resources resulting from ORV use. The effect of the closure, however, remains to be seen.

Last December, a coalition of conservationists, Navajo Tribal leaders, and local business owners filed a formal Petition to Preserve Arch Canyon's Natural and Cultural Resources. Instead of acting on the petition, which is supported by independent scientific research, the BLM is focusing its attention on permit applications for destructive off-road vehicle events in the canyon.
